Welcome to the Hilton Family of Hotels
be hospitable® Traveler Experts Page

In developing the curriculum for the be hospitable® Traveler program, The Hilton Family of Hotels pulled together its hotel team members and a select group of outside experts with backgrounds in travel, cultural awareness and character development. Each of our experts provided their unique perspectives on hospitality and gave personal insights into the dos and don'ts of international travel to promote cultural understanding and hospitable behavior among both Team USA and business and leisure travelers.

Markus Kosch

Markus has been part of the Hilton Family since 1997 and currently is the Director of Operations at the Hilton Beijing. Born in Caracas, Venezuela to career diplomat parents from Bavaria, Germany, Markus has criss-crossed the globe to live and work. He studied hotel management to satisfy his adventurous nature and quest to see the world. Markus has managed to do just that, having worked in Hong Kong, Manila, Shanghai, Maldives and Nanjing before settling down in Beijing where he is proud to play host to the 2008 Summer Games.

For those traveling to Beijing for the Summer Olympics, Markus suggests that visitors come to his city with a positive, open-minded attitude, and should try to adapt to China's customs with respect. With that said, he also encourages his staff to learn about the different cultures and customs of their guests, providing a dynamic atmosphere for mutual appreciation and learning. Markus believes that cultural awareness is the first step to bridge differences in the world.

Markus Kosch on Thoughtfulness:

Westerners believe that tipping is not necessary, which is a misconception. There may be the occasional case when a person refuses a tip, but generally tipping is encouraged and exercised.

Chinese can be extremely superstitious. Auspicious ceremonies and religious rituals can be found throughout Chinese tradition and culture. A good example is the opening day of the 2008 Olympic Games starting August 8 (08.08.08) reflecting the awesome number 8 in Chinese society. Favorable numbers often play a role in marriages, births and businesses.
